General Description

This course explores interactions between living things and their environment. Students will begin with a life science phenomena that integrates the core ideas of biology with the human body system.  Students will also demonstrate the use of science and engineering practices that will help in their understanding of biological processes that are essential for life’s existence.


  • Construct an explanation as how DNA codes for proteins and what happens if a mutation is present and linked to certain diseases
  • Develop and use a model to understand the importance of how cells are specialized and work within our organ systems
  • Use a model to illustrate the role of cell division and cancer
  • Use a model to illustrate photosynthesis and its connection to medicine
  • Construct macromolecule models to aid in the explanation in their role in digestion
  • Use a model to demonstrate how cellular respiration relates energy transfer, energy flow, and fitness
  • Develop a model to describe the connection between photosynthesis and cellular respiration as it applies to carbon, life, and health
  • Evaluate the evidence for the role in group behavior on global health and epidemics
  • Make and defend a claim based on evidence for genetic variations, mutations, and disorders
  • Apply concepts and statistics of probability to explain the variation and distribution of expressed traits in a population using blood typing and transfusions
  • Simulate part of a medical lab team testing a bacteria from two different patients as their resistance to antibiotics to provide evidence for evolution in action
  • Construct an explanation after testing for whether the enzyme lactase is present to digest lactose from two populations related, yet isolated populations, to help in the explanation of natural selection leading to adaptations

Theory of Action

The goal of science education at EHS is to engage our students through student choice. Each course is designed to encourage scientific literacy and critical thinking through relevant topics and authentic experiences in the lab and classroom.
