This course explores the biochemical relationship between the structure and behavior of matter to its role in health and the environment. Students will use science and engineering practices to understand the chemical processes that are essential for life’s existence.
- Calculate bone density and measure calories within food to understand matter and energy.
- Use the periodic table to develop a model to understand the history and design of the atom as well as to predict its trends.
- Investigate ionic and covalent bonds through electrolytes and then test unknown substances using solubility, melting point, and conductivity.
- Develop a model to demonstrate the release or absorption of energy in a chemical reaction through calorimetry and hydration/dehydration of crystals.
- Using the technique, titration to compare aspirins to develop an understanding of stoichiometry.
- Compare and analyze carbon dioxide levels to better understand how pH, acids, and bases work.
- Use a model to demonstrate the chemical reactions of photosynthesis and cellular respiration.
